At His Keepsake

We believe that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are a precious gift from God. Founded by Nicole Alston, who has been actively involved with the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) community since 1998, our nonprofit is
dedicated to creating innovative solutions and providing steadfast support. Our mission is to ensure that every individual with developmental disabilities can live a life full of joy, purpose, and
fulfillment, and we are committed to working tirelessly, day by day, to make that a reality.

Fiscal Sponsor

Fiscal sponsorship is a relationship in which an unincorporated group or project seeking to carry out charitable activities affiliates with an existing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that shares a compatible mission

A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit organization that provides fiduciary oversight, financial management, and other administrative services to help build the capacity of charitable projects.

Using a fiscal sponsorship arrangement offers a way for a cause to attract donors even when it is not yet recognized as tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). In essence the fiscal sponsor serves as the administrative “home” of the cause. Charitable contributions are given to the fiscal sponsor, which then grants them to support the cause.

Meet the Founder

Nicole A. Alston, born in Baltimore, Maryland, is a shining example of faith, resilience, and love for her community. Raised by her maternal grandmother, she overcame challenges with unwavering faith in God, graduating from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and building a loving family with her husband, Frederick Alston, and their seven children.

Nicole’s dedication to faith led her to active roles in her church, where she inspired her family and others with the promise of Romans 8:28. Her life took a pivotal turn in 2014 when her daughter Kasmir survived a life-threatening accident. Defying grim prognoses, Nicole’s tireless care helped Kasmir achieve a miraculous recovery. This experience deepened Nicole’s compassion for individuals with disabilities, leading her to establish His Keepsake, Inc., a nonprofit that empowers and embraces the DDA Community. Nicole’s story is a testament to the transformative power of faith and love, leaving a legacy of hope and inspiration.

Kasmir's Inspiring Journey

The turning point in Kasmir’s life came at the age of 18, when a tragic vehicle accident in Virginia nearly claimed her life. Ejected through the sunroof during the crash, she was medevaced to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury that left her brain in a state of chaos. Doctors gave a grim prognosis, suggesting she would either die or remain in a vegetative state for the rest of her life. Despite this, Kasmir’s mother, driven by unwavering faith and love, refused to accept the outcome, believing that with God’s will, her daughter would overcome the odds. Kasmir was transferred to the University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma Unit, where she remained in a coma for a month, showing no signs of awareness. After over 60 days of treatment, she was moved to a nursing home, where therapy was denied. Her mother, refusing to give up, took on the role of her personal therapist, nurturing her daughter’s potential.

Kasmir Defied Expectations

Over time, Kasmir defied expectations, regaining her ability to walk, talk, and live independently. After more than a year, she returned home and became an active member of the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) Community. Kasmir’s journey not only transformed her own life but also inspired her mother to dedicate herself to helping others in the DDA community, combining over a decade of professional experience with personal devotion to make a lasting impact.
